Reduce, reuse, recycle. Help make a difference in your community today.
Read more below about the importance of recycling and what you can do.
The Importance of Recycling
Recycling helps protect the environment. Recycling conserves resources, prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect raw material to make new products and lessens the need to build landfills.
Recycling plays a significant role in the state’s economy. South Carolina is home to about 500 recycling businesses that provide more than 22,000 jobs.
Recycling saves energy. Manufacturing products from recycled material uses far less energy than making the same product from raw material. This makes us less energy dependent.
Six actions you can take to make a BIG difference
Learn more about your community’s recycling program and participate.
The best (and possibly easiest) thing you can do is to know what is accepted in your community whether that is at the curb or at the drop-off sites. Learn what and where to recycle near you.
Items like plastic grocery bags, Styrofoam cups and containers don’t belong in your recycling bin. Your local grocery store, however, may accept them. Ask the next time you’re there. To learn more, go to the “Resources & Tips” link at the top.
Recycle with retailers.
Big box retailers and office supply stores often have recycling options for customers. Ask if they offer any recycling services for electronics, printers, ink/toner cartridges, packaging and other hard-to-manage items. Learn more about recycling hard-to-manage items.
Recycle at work and school.
Recycling doesn’t stop at home. Try to recycle on the job and at school. Learn more about DHEC’s Smart Business Recycling Program. Visit www.takeactionsc.org for information on recycling, composting and reducing food waste at school.
Recycle on the go.
Be on the lookout for recycling containers at South Carolina’s 47 state parks and historical sites and at the state’s four largest airports. Learn more about recycling at South Carolina’s State Parks.
Reduce your overall waste!
While recycling has many environmental benefits, it is important to first reduce your overall waste. Try a reusable water bottle instead of single-use plastic ones or refuse the packaged plastic ware with to-go orders. Research more ways on how to reduce your waste.
